Kenya Supreme Court annuls August 8 Presidential Results IEBC to Call Fresh Elections in 60 Days

Kenya’s Supreme Court has nullified the result of the August 8 2017 presidential election. Raila Odinga chief of opposition NASA contested the results in court after the Electoral body IEBC declared Uhuru Kenyatta the winner.

In a ruling issued on Friday, the court said the electoral board committed “irregularities and illegalities” during last month’s vote.

The court ordered another presidential election within 60 days.

“The declaration of Kenyatta’s win is invalid, null and void,” said Judge David Maraga, announcing the verdict of four out of the six judges.

Kenyatta was announced the winner with 54 percent but Odinga claimed the election was rigged with electronic voting results hacked into and manipulated in favour of Kenyatta.

IEBC Sets 17th of October 2017 for Fresh Presidential Elections

FRESH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

NAIROBI: 4″‘ SEPTEMBER 2017

During its 204″‘ Plenary Meeting held today, the

Commission resolved as follows:

  1. A fresh presidential election will be held on the

17th of October 2017. This is in conformity with

the Supreme Court decision annulling the

presidential election held on 8″‘ August 2017.

  1. There shall be no fresh nominations in the

envisaged fresh election. In the fresh election, the

petitioners before the Supreme Court, the Hon

Raila Odinga and his running mate Hon. Stephen

Kalonzo Musyoka, and the 3″‘ respondent, H.E.

Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate Hon.

William Samoei Ruto, shall be the only candidates.

The Commission is revising the operational and

procedural requirements for the conduct of the fresh

election and will share details with stakeholders sooner

than later.

In light of the Supreme Court judgment, it is

imperative that a detailed judgment in the just

concluded petition is released in order to allow the

Commission to identify areas that require improvement

in the management of the fresh election.

The Commission calls for patience and understanding

among all stakeholders as we work together to deliver

free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.
