Entry Requirements
Candidates shall be admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce upon satisfying the minimum entrance requirement of the University.
Candidates will be required to have any of the following qualification:
i. Mean grade of KCSE C+ or equivalent with at least C in Mathematics and English
ii. Advanced Level certificate with 2 principal passes and a credit pass in Mathematics at ‘O’ Level
iii. Degree from a recognized university
iv. Diploma in a relevant field from a recognized institution OR CPA/CPS Part II or equivalent with at least Mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE and C (plain) in Mathematics
and English.
v. Mean grade of C- at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions

Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • A student wishing to study Bachelor of Science(Analytical Chemistry and Management) must satisfy the minimum university requirements and the School of Pure and Applied Sciences Regulations.
  • The student must have passed with a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or its equivalent with at least B- in Chemistry, C+ in English, C+ in Mathematics and C+ in  either  Physics/Physical Sciences or Biology/Biological Sciences.

OR

  • A mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or its equivalent with at least a C+ in Mathematics,Chemistry C+ and a Diploma in analytical Chemistry of at least a Credit pass from a recognized institution.

OR

  • Two principal passes at A Level or equivalent in Chemistry and Mathematics and a subsidiary pass in Physics or Biology.

B.SC (INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY WITH MANAGEMENT)

Entry Requirements

  • A student wishing to study Bachelor of Science(Industrial Chemistry and Management) must satisfy the minimum university requirements and the School of Pure and Applied Sciences Regulations.
  • The student must have passed with a mean grade of C+ (plus) in KCSE or its equivalent with at least B- in Chemistry, C+ in English, C+ in Mathematics and C+ in  either  Physics/Physical Sciences or Biology/Biological Sciences.

OR

  • A mean grade of C (plain) at KCSE or its equivalent with at least a C+ in Mathematics and English and a Diploma in industrial chemistry of at least a Credit pass from a recognized institution.

OR

  • Two principal passes at A Level or equivalent in Chemistry and Mathematics and a subsidiary pass in Physics or Biology.

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE PROGRAMMES

Entry Requirements

  • A student wishing to study Chemistry must satisfy the minimum University requirements and School of Pure and Applied Sciences regulations.
  • A student intending to major in Chemistry must study Mathematics as a subject in the first and second years of study.
  • Candidates must have passed Mathematics in the KSCE at a minimum grade of B-.  In addition, a candidate must have passed any two subjects from the following alternatives at the grades shown:

Alternative A:    Chemistry B, Biology B-, Physics B-, Geography B-.
Alternative B:    Physical Sciences B, Biological Sciences B, Geography B-

There are three options:

  1. 3:3:2:2    Major – 8 units in Chemistry, 4 units in another Department.
    Regular – 6 units in Chemistry, 6 units in another Department.
    Minor – 4 units in Chemistry, 8 units in another Department.
  2. 3:3:2:1  Major – 8 units in Chemistry, 4 units in another Department in the third year and  12 in Chemistry in the fourth year.
  3. 3:3:1:1  Major – 12 units in Chemistry both in the third and fourth year (offered at the  discretion of the Department).
  • A student should not register for a course before he/she has taken the prerequisite course.  Minors and regulars must choose their courses from the core units offered first before taking the electives.  For a students to graduate he/she must have passed all the required units.

BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (SCIENCE) PROGRAMME

Entry Requirements

  • The same entry requirements as for B.Sc. will apply for those wishing to study Chemistry as one of their subjects.
  • In the first year students will study 4 units in Chemistry and in the second year 4 units.
  • In the third and fourth year the student may study Chemistry as a major, regular or minor subject.  The following options will therefore be offered in the third and fourth years.

Major 6 units, Regular 4 units, Minor 2 units.

  • A student should not register for a course before he/she has taken the prerequisite course.  Minors and regulars must choose their courses from the core units offered first before taking the electives.  For a students to graduate he/she must have passed all the required units.

Mode of Study and Duration
The Department of Plant and Microbial Sciences offers full time, School Based and Opening Learning mode of study. All programmes last four academic years. By using the optional additional period of study during the long vacations it is possible for the students to complete these programmes in three years.

 

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Course Structure and Units Offered

For the purpose of registration, Mathematics is considered as a single subject. As a subject Mathematics can be combined with a number of other subjects in the university under one of the following categories: Minor, regular or major. Students in mathematics take courses leading to any of the following degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.)
  • Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
  • BSc Acturial Science
  • BSc Mathematics & Computer Sciences

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

  • Ed (Science)
  • Sc (General)
  • Sc (Telecomunication and Information Technology-T.I.T)

Course Structure and Units Offered
The students studying B.Sc (General) will choose their second and third departments as Mathematics and Chemistry. B.Ed (Science) students taking physics will combine with either Mathematics or Chemistry. The third department is Education.

Students are also required to take between 4 and 5 University Common Units.

Course Structure and Units Offered
Students enrolled in B.Sc (TIT) programme are advised by the department on which, Mathematics and Chemistry units to take in their first and second year of study. Students are also required to take between 4 and 5 University Common Units.

 

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCES

The following BSC programs are resident in the Department of Zoological sciences:

  • BSc Coastal & Marine Resource Management
  • BSc Animal Health.
  • BSc Biology.
  • Education.

 

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Microbiology offers courses to students from the School of Agriculture and Enterprise Development, School of Applied Human Sciences, School of Education, School of Environmental Studies and School of Medicine.

Undergraduate programme.

  • Bachelor of science(Microbiology).

Entry Requirements.

  • A student wishing to study Microbiology must satisfy the minimum University requirements and School of Pure and Applied Sciences regulations.
  • A student must have C+ in Biology or Biological Sciences,Plus at least ANY TWO of the following subjects; Physical Sciences,Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Agriculture,
  • OR, at least two principal passes one which must be in Biology in the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education(KACE),
  • OR, C plain in KCSE (or Division III KCE/EACE) with credit pass at diploma level in any of the following areas: Education(Biology),Applied Biology,Agriculture, or Microbiology from an institition recognized by the University Senate.
  • OR, Mean grade of C-(minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized/accredited Institutions.

Certification.

Graduates of this course will be awarded a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology) degree.

Programme Structure and Duration.

Students taking B.Sc. (Microbiology) must complete 48 departmental units in addition to 3 university common Units.

 

DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE

Undergraduate Courses

  1. Bachelor of Science(General).
  2. Bachelor of Arts.
  3. Bachelor of Education.
  4. Bachelor of Science(Mathematics and Computer Science)

Entry requirements

  • The Common University regulations for undergraduate admissions shall apply.
  • Students must have at least grade B-(minus) at KCSE or equivalent in Mathematics.
  • Mean grade of C-(minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploms at Kenyatta University or any other recognizd / accredited Institutions.

Certification.

Students under B.Sc.(general) and B.A.(general) programmes whospecialize in Mathematics only in their third and fourth years of study will be awarded B.Sc.(Mathematics) and B.A. (Mathematics) degree certificates respectively.

Bachelor of Science (Actuarial Science)

Entry reqiurements.

  • The Common University regulations for undergraduate admissions and Schoolo of Pure and Applied Sciences regulations shall apply.
  • Must have passed the following subjects at the grades indicated at KCSE or equivalent.Mathematics B and English B-.,OR
  • Must have passed with two principal passes,one which must be mathematics at KACE or equivalent plus a subsidiary pass in General paper.
  • Diploma holders in Actuarial Science with atleast credit pass from an accredited institution and a C+ in Mathematics at KCSE.
  • Mean grade of C-(minus) at KCSE and progressed from certificate to Diploma at Kenyatta University or any other recognized / accredited Institution.
